NEW ULM — Grant Gibbons has been announced as publisher of The Journal, in New Ulm and The Independent of Marshall on Monday. He will be replacing Greg Orear, publisher since 2016. Orear has taken a publishing position with a newspaper group in Missouri.

Gibbons, 57, will be relocating to New Ulm from Fort Dodge, Iowa, where he worked as Regional Circulation Manager for the Fort Dodge Messenger since 2000.

As regional circulation manager for the Ogden Newspapers in the area, Gibbons has traveled and worked with papers in New Ulm, Fairmont and Marshall in Minnesota and in other upper Midwest states.

Having visited New Ulm over the years, Gibbons said he is excited to be moving here.

“I love the community. It has a lot of pride,” Gibbons said. “I like the vibrant downtown, scenic settings, all the festivals and community events.

“I’m looking forward to being part of the community. I want to meet with the business people and find out how we can continue to provide a great newspaper here.”

Gibbons will also be publisher and oversee The Independent in Marshall.

Gibbons is a native of Albany, Wis., south of Madison. He studied Journalism and Political Science at the University of Wisconsin in Oshkosh. His first job after college was with the Janesville, Wis. Gazette, working in circulation, distribution and sales.

He has worked for papers as circulation manager and marketing ever since, in Monroe, Wis., Fond du Lac, Wis., Appleton and Oshkosh before taking a position with the Fort Dodge, Iowa, Messenger.

Over the years, Gibbons has been involved in his community in many ways. He served as mayor of Harcourt, Iowa, for six years, and was a member and chair of the Southeast Webster Grand School District.

He served as chairman for the Alzheimer’s Memory Walk in his community several years, a cause he strongly supports.

A self-described history buff, Gibbons is looking forward to learning more about the history of New Ulm and the area.

He is married to his wife Staci of 26 years. They have three children – a daughter Sydney who teaches elementary school in Chicago, a son Joshua who is a second-year med student at Des Moines University, and a daughter Leah who teaches music in New Prague.
