Commissioners to consider CSAH 5 bridge repair

Repair estimated at $17K

By Fritz Busch 1 min read

NEW ULM -- Brown County commissioners will consider the repair propopsal for a CSAH 5 Cottonwood River bridge at their meeting Tuesday, Jan. 17.

The county highway department inspected bridges last summer and determined additional structural inspection was needed. Erickson Engineering was contacted to perform inspection and submit repair recommendations because they were the original bridge design consultant or they designed the original bridge.

Repair of bridge 08519 was completed last fall. The county highway department would like to repair bridge 08434 in 2023.

The bridge is 326 feet long and a 40 feet wide, five-span pre-stressed concrete beam bridge over the Cottonwood River on CSAH 5 in Springfield. Built in 1989, it has a 97.9 sufficiency rating, which is good.

However, bridge abutments are beginning to tip toward the river. It is anticipated that abutment retaining blocks have failed, allowing the ground to push them toward the river. Estimated repair is $17,000 from Erickson Engineering.

Commissioners will also consider:

• Setting the county board of review for 7 p.m., Monday, June 12. A continuance meeting request is for 1 p.m., Tuesday, June 20.

The board meeting begins at 9 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 17 in the courthouse commissioner's room.
