NEW ULM -- The Grand Center for Arts & Culture welcomes a new artist in residence, Louise Fisher, a Minnesota based artist who holds an MFA in printmaking from Arizona State University.
Fisher grew up on a farm in Iowa, where she obtained her BFA degree with honors from the University of Northern Iowa.
As an interdisciplinary artist, Fisher works in the expanded field of print; using methods of layering, impressing, and repetition. Her current body of work began with an interest in how light pollution alters circadian rhythms and our collective sense of wonder. She became concerned with how artificial light impacts nocturnal species and human health, as well as our ability to see the night sky. Fisher has collected photographs and other images of the night sky that will be used as inspiration when creating artistic images in The Grand's Cellar Press, printmaking studio.
Fisher will use the Vandercook presses in Cellar Press to create an artist book featuring her poetry, photographs and illustrations. Fisher plans to create an edition of 20 small chapbooks that are pamphlet-stitched with poems printed in hand-set type. As a community component, Fisher plans to participate in National Poetry Month activities where she will read and show poetry created during her residency.
