NEW ULM -- Police reported late Tuesday that a missing 57-year-old New Ulm woman was found dead at about 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, near the Diocese of New Ulm, 1421 6th North St.

New Ulm Police Commander Dean Barstad said a citizen reported finding the body of Christine Marie Buechner north of the diocese building. Barstad said it appeared the woman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A 9mm handgun was found at the scene.

In announcing a search for the woman on Tuesday, police said she could be armed but was not wanted for any crime.

Barstad said a Brown County Sheriff's Office drone and a drone owned by a private contractor were used to during the Tuesday search for Buechner.

Due to a concern for her welfare, police began searching Buechner Tuesday, reporting she was last seen at about 5 a.m. Monday, July 17.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 23, at Christ the King Lutheran Church in New Ulm. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Homes North Chapel.
