People concerned about
water quality and soil health
in Brown County should
consider filing by May 31 for
election as supervisor of the
Brown Soil and Water Conservation
District.
Supervisors play an important
role in managing
county natural resources
such as wetlands, rivers,
lakes and farmland. Those
interested in running for
supervisor should file at the
county auditor's office between
May 17-31.
SWCDs are special purpose
units of government
that manage and direct conservation
programs at the
local level.
Important programs and
priorities of Brown SWCD
include:
•Reinvest In Minnesota
(RIM) conservation easement
program,
•State Cost Share program,
and
•One Watershed, One
Plan program.
This year, Brown SWCD
has three open positions
for the Nov. 8 general election.
Candidates are elected
countywide, but must reside
in one of the supervisor districts
up for election. These
include: District 2 (twoyear
term in townships of
Bashaw, Leavenworth, and
Mulligan, plus all of the incorporated
area of Comfrey
in Brown County); District 3
(four-year term in the townships
of Eden, Home Prairieville
and Stark, plus all
of the incorporated area of
Sleepy Eye, Evan, and Cobden);
and District 5 (fouryear
term in the townships
of Cottonwood, Milford, and
Sigel, plus all of the incorporated
area of New Ulm).
SWCD business includes
state grant allocations to
landowners, district conservation
priorities; coordination
with other local units
of government and state
agencies and legislative priorities.
Supervisors do not receive
a salary but are reimbursed
for attending
meetings and expenses.
