Sleepy Eye FFA excels at state FFA convention

Fifty-nine Sleepy Eye FFA members traveled to the University of Minnesota campuses and State Fairgrounds to compete in the Future Farmers of America state convention April 24-26.

Adviser Mary Hoffmann summed it up: "I am so proud of all of the hard work that the Sleepy Eye FFA members show on a daily basis. These members show and earn success through their great work ethic and dedication.”

The Sleepy Eye FFA Career Development Event teams brought home plaques and success stories after competing at the state level. Nine Sleepy Eye FFA CDE Teams placed in the Top 13 in CDE contests.

Isaac Lendt won a state poultry title, Adam Johnson was second, Winsten Nienhaus sixth and Noah Rossbach competed on the state championship team.

The Milk Quality team was state runnerup. Katelyn Capacia was fourth individually.

The Marketing team finished fifth, Floriculture seventh, Soils 10th, Dairy 11th and Best Informed Greenhand team 12th and 13th.

Others team placing at state were Meats with silver (Alex Confer, Yuridia Fernandez, Trevor Rathman, Gavin Fischer), Nursery Landscape with silver (Kyle Capacia, Marcus Martinez, Leisha Martinez, Austin Ueckerm) and Forestry bronze (Daniel Armstrong, Jaelynn Schauman, Sam Price and Hannah Meyer).

In the proficiency category, the following individuals placed in the top three in the state:

• Morgan Hoffmann -- Ag. Communications: first, advanced to nationals

• Jake Price -- Landscape Management: advanced to nationals

• Adam Johnson -- Poultry Production, first, advanced to nationals

• Isaac Lendt -- Swine Production Entrepreneurship, second.

The Sleepy Eye FFA had 10 members receive their State FFA degrees: Wyatt Barnes, Presley Braun, Katelyn Capacia, Alexis Garza, Maddison Helget, Sophie Kyllonen, Taylor Lambrecht, Carmen Lendt, Brennen Meyer, and Jacob Schultz.

Sophie Kyllonen was recognized as a state finalist for Minnesota Star in Ag. Production Placement.

Several junior high students participated in the State Agriscience Fair this year. Top 3 winners were: Daniel Armstrong (Plant Systems, Division I, second place), Euridia Fernandez and Maria Galaviz-Camacho (Plant Systems, Division II, first place), Destiney Dittbenner and Taylor Berkner (Plant Systems, Division II, second place) and Ari Krzmarzick and Emma Weilage (Plant Systems, Division II, third place).

Sleepy Eye FFA was named Runnerup Chapter for the National Chapter Award.

Sleepy Eye was the Top Chapter for the Ag. Literacy Challenge and fourth place for the Land of Service Challenge.

Sleepy Eye FFA was also recognized as a Model of Innovation Finalist for Growing Leaders -- Wee Deliver Buddies Program with 3rd graders.
