NEW ULM-- Saturday was prom night, and it was an evening to remember for many area students.
New Ulm High School and Minnesota Valley Lutheran both celebrated proms, and for both schools, it was the first full proms held since 2019.
The COVID-19 pandemic effectively canceled the 2020 prom. In 2021, local schools were able to host grand marches, but without a school dance to follow.
No such restrictions have been in place this year. Students were able to put on their formal wear and dance the night away.
NUHS staff was delighted to bring the prom back inside the gym with a Mardi Gras-themed grand march.
MVL junior class adviser Jeff Schoenherr was also excited the students could have a full dance. The fact many of the students attending this year were ninth- or 10th-graders the last time a dance made it a unique experience. Many of the students would need to relearn how a prom was done, but they caught on quickly.
If there was an obstacle blocking prom this year, it was the weather. Rain fell off and on all day, and by the time dances were to begin there was a steady downpour. As a result, this weekend's most popular fashion accessory was the umbrella.
The rain prevented many couples from getting outdoor pre-prom photos. Fortunately, several area institutes offered indoor opportunities. Foresee Studios opened its building space, along with the adjacent New Ulm Real Estate office to give the student a dry place to take photos.
The Grand Center for the Arts and Culture was also a popular place for taking prom pictures. Several students walked through the Installation exhibit in formalwear.
A few couples braved the weather to take photos in German Park. The park even attracted couples from neighboring school districts.
