County gets $44.4K in voting grants

NEW ULM — Brown County commissioners will consider authorizing Auditor/ Treasurer Kelli Hotovec to purchase $61,600 worth of voting equipment for the 2022 election cycle Tuesday, April 5.

The state of Minnesota’s VEGA-3 voting equipment grant and Help American Vote Act would cover $44,419 of the investment, leaving $19,161 in expended levy funds and American Rescue Plant Act (ARPA) funds to cover the cost.

Voting equipment sought includes 14 omni ballot tablets and an electronic roster and WiFi hotspot to be deployed to Milford Township. The tablets include stackable, hard-sided transport cases and shipping and handling. A $3,150 annual software licensing fee will be charged later. The devices will replace outdated Automark machines at all polling locations.

Commissioners will also consider:

• Approving Brown County District Court Judge Docherty’s appointed probation director Evonn Westcott’s $102,583 annual salary effective April 8 Candidate recruitment to fill the position will be determined at a later date. The proposed salary correlates with Step 11 on the probation director MAPE salary grid. Discussion will be held to determine candidate recruitment with a judge’s appointment to fill a probation department vacancy due to Westcott’s promotion.

• Authorizing the purchase of two Highway Department mowers for $25,500 each from Miller Sellner Implement, Sleepy Eye, to replace 2013 mowers that are worn out.

• Accept an $8,377 low quote from Webstaurant.com for a jail dishwasher machine using jail commissary funds.

• Awarding the lowest bid for the installation of a 16-foot-by-30-foot Brown County Sanitary Landfill scale house with steel siding and roofing to replace arental trailer unit. Bids are $33,764 from Town’s Edge Lumber, $37,242 from Puhlmann Lumber and $37,297 from Design Home Center. Bids do not include plumbing, heating/cooling, or electrical costs. Funds come from the landfill account.

• Setting a public hearing date for 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 3, to review a proposed Lake Hanska County Park Campground Ordinance. Changes include an online reservation system and addressing parking issues.

• A resolution ending the state of emergency issued March 17, 2020, and continued Jan. 5, 2021.
