SPRINGFIELD -- The Springfield Area Softball Association (SASA) is starting a fundraising drive to support construction costs for a new saferoom complex at Riverside Park.

The organization hopes to raise $150,000 to support construction costs for a storm shelter by June 1. The facility will be designed to meet federal criteria to provide protection in extreme wind events like tornados and severe thunderstorms.

Last year Springfield was awarded $651,000 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Hazard Mitigation grant program.

Funds are to go toward construction of a community safe room -- storm shelter -- with a capacity of 491. Matching grants are available, including through the Elsie and Henry Roiger Trust.

Anyone wishing to contribute can contact Springfield City Hall at 507-723-3500.
