NEW ULM -- Brown County commissioners will consider on Jan. 25 a request by LJP Waste Solutions/Ponderosa Landfill of North Mankato to bring about 17k tons of waste to the Brown County Landfill on temporary basis.
Commissioners tabled the request last week. LJP operates the Ponderosa Landfill six miles southwest of Mankato and must divert municipal solid waste (MSW) to remain compliant with its certificate of need permit.
The waste streams feeding the Ponderosa Landfill are bringing more MSW to the landfill. Blue Earth County is making LJP divert waste away from Ponderosa, according to the board request.
LJP plans to divert about five semi-trailer trucks per day (about 100 tons) with floor walkers to another landfill. The Brown County Landfill is closer to Ponderosa than other options.
Waste hauling from LJP is proposed to last 34 weeks and bring a little more than 26,000 total cubic yards to the Brown County Landfill.
Brown County received about 51,000 cubic yards this year. The landfill has received about 45,000 cubic yards per year over the past few years.
Steve Metz of LJP said he wants to negotiate the Brown County Landfill out-of-county tipping fee recently set at $60 per ton, according to the request.
Commissioners will also consider:
• Approving by resolution the county application for the Help America Vote (HAVA) Grants Program.
The program does not require counties to match any funding amount.
• Setting a letting date for the 1.016 mile new alignment of CSAH 13 from the CSAH 29/North Highland Avenue to existing CSAH 13 north of New Ulm. A bituminous trail will be built on one side of the road. A concrete sidewalk with ADA improvements will be built on the other side of the road.
Projects will be funded with county regular state aid funds, local funds and New Ulm state aid funds shown in the current 10-year program.
The county highway department recommends the board set the letting date for 10 a.m., March 2, 2022 at the courthouse. Projects are anticipated to be done from May to October 2022.
• Setting 2023 minimum salaries for elected county officials--the county recorder, county sheriff and county attorney.
The county board meeting begins at 9 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 25 in the courthouse commissioner's room.
