Kiesling House to feature leather art

NEW ULM — The public is invited to the historic Kiesling House to see a leather art demonstration on Saturday, Aug. 28, from 1 to 4 p.m. The program includes a demonstration and a display of leather work.

Leather artisan Dan Cochran will demonstrate his craft in period costume. Cochran started his craft in 1995; after trying many types of crafts, he fell in love with the leather craft. Leather items made by Cochran will be available for purchase.

This presentation complements the regular programming which includes a guided tour, a video presentation and exhibits. Explore the past at historic Kiesling House constructed in 1861; it survived the US – Dakota War of 1862. Learn about early pioneer settlement, customs and traditions of area immigrants and events, like the US -Dakota War of 1862, that shaped New Ulm. Examine the development of community and influence of social and political issues on residents that lived in this area of Minnesota.

The Historic Kiesling House is open Friday and Saturday, 1-4 p.m. Memorial Day through Labor Day and by appointment. Admission is $3 per person, free for BCHS members and for children ages 4 and under.
