It’s crazy days again in New Ulm

A to Zinnia went all in on the Crazy Days sales Friday, with a special outdoor sales. Many of their Christmas items were on sale at discount for a Christmas in July style sale. Other downtown businesses offered similar discounted sales that will continue through Saturday.

NEW ULM — Crazy Days have returned to New Ulm this weekend.

The city’s downtown businesses have gone crazy with special sales deals. On Friday, many of the stores held special sales with marked down prices, but this was just the beginning.

Saturday will have a full schedule of special sales events. The fun starts at 9 a.m. Saturday with the traditional Ping Pong ball drop. Hundreds of ping pong balls will be dropped off the second-floor of the New Ulm Area Chamber of Commerce at 1 North Minnesota Street. Each ball will have a discount at a specific store printed on it. Whoever collects the ball may turn it into the store for a special discount.

Also at 9 a.m. Saturday, Maker Fair Minnesota will team up with the Chamber to host Marktstrasse. Around 50 artisan vendors will open up shop in downtown New Ulm. Certain streets will be blocked off to accommodate the vendors.

At 10 a.m. Saturday, children’s activities will start. The games involve dunk tank, animal balloons, bounce house and other fun activities.

The Chamber has a box full of ping pong balls that are ready to drop Saturday morning. These balls are loaded with special discounts around town.

For the history minded adults, a special Table Walk is planned. Visitors to the Chamber may pick up a sheet with a series of trivia questions related to New Ulm’s history. The answers to these questions are printed on nine picnic tables in downtown New Ulm. Fill out the card with the correct answers for a special prize.

At dusk, a special outdoor movie will be screened on Minnesota Street using an inflatable screen. This year’s movie is “Miracle” a 2004 film staring Kurt Russell about the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team.

Root beer floats will be served during the film with the ice cream provided by MN Eis. The ice cream shop will take free will donations.

Chamber Event Coordinator Laurie Johnson said there is a lot going on this weekends, but there is a pent-up demand for activities and Crazy Days promises to be family friendly.

Chamber President Michael Looft said they do expect a high turnout on Saturday based on responses on social media. Last weekend’s Bavarian Blast put New Ulm on map and many people are expected to return this weekend as well.
