NEW ULM -- The man who shot himself during a June 22 traffic stop in New Ulm and later died from the injury, has been identified as Ryan Steinbach, 36, of Fairfax.
Police initiated a traffic stop for a vehicle equipment violation in the 500 block of 7th South Street at 8:13 p.m. Tuesday. Police suspected Steinbach may have been impaired. While attempting to investigate the matter, Steinbach became non-compliant, then combative, according to a June 24 New Ulm Police Department news release.
Steinbach produced a handgun, made suicidal-related statements to officers, then shot himself as officers struggled to take the handgun from him.
Steinbach was transported by ambulance to a local hospital and later to a Twin Cities metro area medical facility where he died from his injury at about 12:36 a.m. June 23.
All New Ulm Police officers on scene wore activated body-worn cameras. The images and recordings from the cameras, and those from a nearby squad car camera system, are being analyzed and are not released at this time.
New Ulm Police Chief Dave Borchert said the officers involved in the incident, Andrew Kuester, Andrew Achman, and Tyler Forst, did not draw their weapons and remain in active status in the police department.
The incident is under investigation by New Ulm Police with assistance from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, and the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office.
