NEW ULM — Schell’s Brewery opened its new visitor center taproom addition last weekend and held a special media event Thursday to show off the new venue.

The new taproom is located on the brewery grounds in the location of the former gift shop. A special deck patio was also added to the back of the building.

The idea taproom was a long time in production. Asked how long the taproom took to create, Schell’s President Ted Marti said “too long!”

For years, visitors to the Schell’s Brewery have wanted a place to stop in and have a beer on site.

Schell’s Marketing Manager Leigh Wendinger said many were calling for it and this year it became a reality.

Marti said the company moved the gift shop into the former museum space in February and has been working to complete the new taproom ever since.

Wendinger said the old gift shop was gutted to create the beer hall look to the taproom. The only addition to the building was the patio deck and cooler space.

The tables were all manufactured locally by Cala Contemporary Woodworking, and the wall art was painted by Billy Thomas. Wendinger said there was a desire to keep it local.

The taproom has a total of 20 beverages on tap including craft beers, sours, domestics, seltzers and 1919 Root Beer.

The taproom has only been open a week, but the most popular beer in the taproom is the LoCal Twist. The beer is a low-calorie beer with a fruit twist to it. It is one of the newest beers in the Schell’s line and is expected to reach stores in can form soon.

Schell’s held a special soft opening for the taproom last weekend but will hold a grand opening celebration this weekend.

The grand opening celebration begins 11 a.m. Friday with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony with the New Ulm Chamber welcoming committee.

Prizes will be handed out to guests throughout the day from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Lola’s Food Truck will also be on-site from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Saturday the grand opening celebration will continue from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. with more prize giveaways. Dain’s Dutchman will perform on the patio from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sozial’s food truck will be on-site from 2 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Brewery Tours have also restarted. Tours will start at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., and 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Tours are $10 per person over age 12.

The hours of the taproom will be 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday through Thursday; 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays; 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday through Saturday.
