LAFAYETTE -- May 17-22 Lafayette Public Charter School students and staff celebrated Charter School Week with a number of activities. On Monday, classes dressed in themes (super heroes, Harry Potter, Hawaiian shirts) and spent the afternoon outdoors, competing against each other in "The Amazing Race." Student pairs had to complete a number of tasks as quickly as possible, and then run back to "The Mat", hoping to finish in first place. Tasks included completing a jigsaw puzzle, carrying a ping pong ball on a spoon all the way around the baseball diamond without dropping it, and eating a Jello cup without using their hands.

Tuesday was Cowboy/Cowgirl/Farmer Day, and, in addition to fun costumes, students were treated to a presentations by Brent Mielke, also known as Zoo Man. Zoo Man, headquartered in Sleepy Eye, has been bringing his reptiles to schools for over thirty years. At this event, Zoo Man showed a bearded dragon, corn snake, milk snake and a four-foot python that several students got to hold. Students learned about the reptiles' habitats, diet and some fun facts.

Wednesday was Track and Field Day, with events for fun, and some for competition. The entire day was spent outdoors, as students took part in sprints, relays, distance running and games.

On Thursday afternoon, individual classes watched the virtual student talent show that had been recorded in March, and Friday, families gathered on the lawn and celebrate another year of school.

Though the school year was anything but typical, Lafayette Public Charter School students got to attend in-person classes for all but four weeks of the year, and no class had to quarantine.
