NEW ULM -- River Bend school celebrated Earth Day with a series of environmentally friendly activities.

Thursday the students participated in a litter cleanup and scavanger hunt around the school. The students were given a list of specific types of litter often found around the school. This list included items like straws, sandwich wrappers, something made of aluminum; things that could be recycled and things that cannot.

The most challenging item on the list was to find was a penny. Students found very little loose change on the ground, but an abundance of other items.

River Bend school has been doing Earth Day activities for three years now. Teacher Elise Cronin said they hope to make Earth Day bigger and better each year.

Art teacher Carina Johnson led students in creating a mural of the globe using fabric woven through the school's fence.

Other activities included creating Earth Day posters and designing masks. The students recently completed a green report card for the school that included suggestions for how to keep River Bend environmentally friendly.

Toward the end of the school year, River Bend students usually clean up a section of an adopted highway.
