SLEEPY EYE -- Police Chief Matt Andres discussed the virtues of surveillance cameras at the Sleepy Eye City Council Tuesday.
“I think this is the future of law enforcement,” said Andres. “We tested them at Sportsmans Park because there is Wi-Fi there. They have 30 days of video storage and learned the cameras were good. We need them downtown, around the schools, and baseball park.”
Andres said one company offered to sell two cameras with a five-year license, and cloud-based data storage for $3,597.
“I’m not asking to buy them now. I’ll put together a plan for the finance committee,” Andres said. “These as the best cameras I’ve seen. They’re really impressive. They even have license (plate) reading technology.”
Mayor Wayne Pelzel suggested putting the cameras into the city’s five-year plan.
The city council unanimously approved:
• Chuck Hauser’s zoning request for a zero setback on the northwest corner of a building at 9th Avenue S.W. and Walnut Street.
• A $5,000 donation to the Veterans Memorial Garden Avenue of Flags Fundraiser for a new storage shed at Home Cemetery, motion by Doug Pelzel, seconded by Christine Andres.
• Allowing the Sleepy Eye Fire Department to raise annual pension benefits from $2,200 to $2,500 annually. The fire department will pay for the pension increase.
• Allowing the Sleepy Eye Fire Department to order 2021 July Fourth fireworks at the budgeted amount of $7,000.
• Low bids of $5,863.50 and $8,774.50 from The Boat House, Fairmont for a t-dock near the campground cul-de-sac and main boat landing dock. Lake Boys Sales & Service, Cleveland, bid $6,507.60 and $9,712.10 for two roll-a-docks.
• An ordinance amending city code regarding lot size area requirements for a minimum of 9,000 square feet plus 3,000 square feet for each additional dwelling unit, motion by Pelzel, seconded by Stevermer.
• Updating the Pelzel lot split, motion by Andres, seconded by Stevermer. John Pelzel is purchasing Lots 3, 4, and 5, Block 4, Sleepy Hollow Fifth Addition from the City of Sleepy Eye.
• Second reading of Ordinance 182 to sell Lot 10, Block 1 Snow First Addition to Haala Properties, LLLP, (just south of Casey’s) for $72,000.
• Tabled the second reading of Ordinance 184 to allow ATVs or side-by-side vehicles to be used on city streets.
