Wanda Gág’s 128th birthday will be celebrated
NEW ULM —
Gág is best known for writing and illustrating children’s book. Her book “Millions of Cats” is the oldest American picture book still in print. Every year the New Ulm Public Library holds a special event honoring Gág the Saturday after her birthday and the tradition will continue this year through a virtual celebration.
A special video will premier on the library’s Facebook page at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 13. In the video, Youth Service Librarian will lead kids in a special story time honoring Wanda Gág. This year’s Tatnall will read Gag’s book “ABC Bunny”. The book was awarded the Newbery Honor in 1934.
The library has special storytime kits that can be picked up at the library. The kit includes an arts and craft project that goes along with the book. The kit also has a few treats for the kids and two tickets to the Wanda Gág House courtesy of the Wanda Gág House Association.
Tatnall said parents can call ahead to make sure enough kits are available before picking one up.
Last year’s Wanda Gág birthday celebration took place before the COVID-19 pandemic forced the country to lockdown. Tatnall said the celebration was one of the last events hosted at the library before the shutdown. The library is hopeful that in-person celebration will once again be normal by this time next year.
