GFW OKs resolution for employee facing allegations

GIBBON — The Gibbon Fairfax Winthrop (GFW) School Board unanimously approved a resolution Monday to immediately discharge an employee facing allegations.

After 20 minutes in closed session, action came on a motion by board chairman Mike Kuehn, seconded by Jason Haas, for the immediate discharge of a tenured teacher.

Written notice of the action will be sent to the teacher, who will continue to be on paid administrative leave unless convicted of a felony, according to the resolution.

A media statement released Feb. 3 by GFW Superintendent Jeff Horton, read: “We have been notified that a teacher for GFW Public Schools has been charged with maltreatment of a child and 5th-degree assault involving an elementary student.

“Because of data privacy laws, we are unable to release the teacher’s name or the nature of the incident.

“We have been aware of this issue since it occurred Jan. 21 and immediately notified police, began an investigation, and placed the teacher on administrative leave. GFW Public Schools will continue to investigate the incident and take appropriate action.”

The board unanimously approved:

• A registration guide Horton said includes more course offerings than in the past.

“We’re righting the ship and offering new courses including some art courses, by making adjustments,” said Horton.

He said some bi-lingual students with strong language skills may be able to take tests for college credits.

“This looks really cool. I wish I was back in high school and could take some of these courses,” said board member Casey Prochniak.

• Donations including $2,000 from the City of Gibbon for robotics, $50 from the Fairfax Club and $25 from Ogren Insurance for treat bags; plus $48.52 from the Catholic Aid Foundation/Lori Dittrich for the 3M Work Program.
