COURTLAND — The Courtland Fire Department quickly extinguished a fire in an old animal fat tank at the Hanska Farmers Cooperative (HFC) feed mill in Courtland Wednesday.

Two fire trucks and a van were on the scene quickly, just a few blocks from the fire station, in the east end of town. The fire call was received shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Firefighters began rolling up hoses after about 30 minutes on the scene.

Nobody was injured in the fire. Damage was contained to the old animal fat tank which is not used anymore.

“The fire is under investigation, so we’re not sure what caused it yet. It may have been an electrical short,” said Courtland Fire Department Captain Dan Stein.

“The guys (firefighters) did an excellent job. We shut down the feed mill only for a brief time,” said HFC Courtland Grain and Feed General Manager Jerry Svoboda.
