Over 20 teams rushed out of St. Paul’s parking lot Sunday afternoon in an effort to be the first team to complete the Amazing Race.

NEW ULM — St. Paul’s Lutheran Elementary School was the starting and finishing line for an Amazing Race, Sunday.

Twenty-two colorful teams competed to be the first to solve a series of six clues spread across New Ulm and return to the school with the answers.

At 3:30 p.m. all the teams lined up on the curb in front of the school. The two teams that provided the best answer to a social media task were given a head start. These two teams were the Crazy Clown Car and the Might Unicorn Knights. The other 20 teams had to wait a little longer to start.

This was the fourth time the school held the race. The first couple of years the race was run during the warm months but last year switched to a winter tradition. The winter race adds an extra obstacle to the weather.

The race was delayed by a few hours to allow teams to shovel their vehicles out of the snow. Despite the snow delay, nearly all the registered teams were able to participate.

The winning team receives only two awards, the Traveling Trophy and the pride of being the victor.

The Amazing Race contest is a fundraising program to help cover the cost of the school’s new addition.
