NEW ULM — The League of Women Voters (LWV) spread the word about voter registration Tuesday.

Ruth Ann Webster and Ann Wiltscheck were in Lola’s in the morning with registration forms and other information about voting.

The LWV had members at the River Bend Area Learning Center on Monday and would have members at Martin Luther College Tuesday afternoon. The idea is to host voting drives for citizens who recently turned 18 or were not yet registered to vote in Brown County. The LWV is also able to provide information on absentee voting for students already registered in another county.

The league held a similar voting drive with National Honor Society at the New Um high school last spring. The league plans to hold a registration drive at the school next spring also.

Webster said this is a national event to promote voting. The next major election is still a year away, but the league wanted to remind people about the importance of voting.

Webster and Wiltscheck said it was relatively easy to register in Minnesota. It is even possible to register on election day, but it is quicker to register in advance.

“Our goal is to register 10 people,” Webster said. Many of the people they spoke to at Lola’s were already registered to vote.

Those not currently registered can do so online at the Minnesota Secretary of State website. For in-person assistance, eligible voters may be registered at the auditor-treasurer office on the second floor of the Brown County Courthouse.
