Autofest features outdoor movie Saturday night
‘Days of Thunder’ at fairgrounds previews Sunday show
NEW ULM — Jump in your antique or muscle car, grab a portable radio and buy some popcorn and pop Saturday night as the 19th Annual Autofest free drive-in movie features “Days of Thunder.”
The 1990 movie starring Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Robert Duvall and Randy Quaid that lasts about 107 minutes starts at 9:30 p.m. on the backside of the fairgrounds grandstand. Hot dogs and water will also be available at the movie.
The movie about race car drivers, race cars and racing includes appearances by NASCAR drivers including Rusty Wallace, Neil Bonnett, and Harry Grant. It was widely praised for its action sequences, Hans Zimmer’s musical score, featuring Jeff Beck on guitar, fast pace and the performances of Cruise and Kidman.
Principal movie photography took place in early 1990 in and around Charlotte and Daytona Beach.
The movie’s main character Cole Trickle (Tom Cruise), is loosely based on the career of Tim Richmond. Several scenes reenacted or referenced real-life stories and personalities from NASCAR history.
The car and motorcycle show with hundreds of entries expected is set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the fairgrounds. Registration and admission is free and free drawings continue all day. Food and refreshments will be served. Food vendors include Taco Johns, the Isaak Walton League and the Farm City Hub Club.
The first 300 participants will receive calendars, can coolers and more free items.
The Pink Ladies Garage featuring crafts, shopping and wellness will be open in the New Ulm Civic Center ice arena. A swap meet takes place on the race track. The South Central Modelers Model Car Contest will take place.
No dogs, alcohol or bicycles will be allowed on the show grounds.
