Two-alarm fire at ethanol plant

Winthrop firefighters remained at the Heartland Corn Products ethanol plant east of Winthrop early Tuesday afternoon. The Winthrop Fire Department was paged to a fire at the plant at 9:19 a.m. Tuesday and cleared the scene at 4:19 p.m. Winthrop responded with six trucks and 24 firefighters. The Gaylord Fire Department responded with 10 firefighters and three trucks. There were no injuries, according to the Sibley County Sheriff’s Office. The fire was in the distiller’s grain dryer system of the plant, according to Winthrop Fire Chief Troy Martin. The Minnesota State Patrol and Sibley County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the fire call.
