Thousands of Palestinians return to what remains of their homes
WADI GAZA, Gaza Strip (AP) -- Tens of thousands of Palestinians headed back to the heavily destroyed northern Gaza Strip as a U.S.-brokered ceasefire came into effect on Friday. The deal has raised hopes for ending the Israel-Hamas war, with all the remaining hostages taken in the Oct. 7, 2023, attack set to be released within days. Questions remain over who will govern Gaza as Israeli troops gradually pull back and whether Hamas will disarm, as called for in U.S. President Donald Trump's ceasefire plan. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who unilaterally ended a ceasefire in March, hinted that Israel might renew its offensive if Hamas does not give up its weapons.
Russian strikes wound at least 20 in Ukraine's capital as child is killed in separate attack
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) -- Ukrainian authorities say that Russian drone and missile strikes wounded at least 20 people in Kyiv and damaged residential buildings and caused blackouts across swathes of Ukraine. Authorities said Friday that a child was also killed in separate attacks in the southeast of Ukraine. Rescue crews pulled more than 20 people out of a 17-story apartment building in central Kyiv as flames engulfed the sixth and seventh floors. Authorities said that five people were hospitalized while others received first aid at the scene. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the Russian strikes had targeted civilian and energy infrastructure as Ukraine prepared for falling winter temperatures.
Two powerful quakes strike off southern Philippines, killing at least 7 people
MANILA, Philippines (AP) -- Philippine seismologists say that a new offshore earthquake with a preliminary 6.8 magnitude hit the same southern region struck earlier by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4. Philippine Institute of Seismology and Volcanology chief Teresito Bacolcol said that Friday night's earthquake that jolted Manay town in Davao Oriental province was caused by movement in the same fault line at a depth of 23 miles. Philippine seismologists said the second earthquake was a separate temblor from Friday morning's 7.4 magnitude quake which left at least seven people dead.
Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado wins the Nobel Peace Prize
OSLO, Norway (AP) -- Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has won the Nobel Peace Prize. The Norwegian Nobel committee praised her as a key unifying figure in the opposition, advocating for free elections and representative government. Machado has faced serious threats and lives in hiding, inspiring many with her courage. President Nicolás Maduro's government disqualified her from running in last year's presidential election. Machado's ally, Edmundo González, replaced her but later sought asylum in Spain. Machado becomes the 20th woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, joining a distinguished group of laureates.
