Ukraine's president replaces top general to shake up deadlocked war with Russia

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) -- Ukraine's president replaced his top general in a shake-up aimed at reigniting momentum in the deadlocked war with Russia, which is grinding into its third year as the country grapples with shortages of ammunition and personnel and struggles to maintain support from the West. He appointed Thursday the commander of Ukraine's ground forces, Сol. Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi, to lead the army. Zelenskyy commended the two years of service of his outgoing commander-in-chief, Gen. Valerii Zaluzhnyi -- a military leader popular with troops and the general public. Ukraine's struggles with ammunition and personnel come on the heels of a failed counteroffensive last summer.

Volcano in Iceland is erupting again, spewing lava and cutting heat

GRINDAVIK, Iceland (AP) -- A volcano in southwestern Iceland has erupted for the third time since December and sent jets of lava into the sky. The eruption on Thursday morning triggered the evacuation the Blue Lagoon spa which is one of the island nation's biggest tourist attractions. Several communities on the Reykjanes Peninsula were cut off from heat and hot water as a river of lava engulfed a supply pipe. The Icelandic Meteorological Office says the eruption has opened a 3-kilometer or nearly 2-mile fissure northeast of Mount Sýlingarfell. The eruption is about 4 kilometers or 2½ miles northeast of Grindavik, a coastal town of 3,800 people that was evacuated before a previous eruption on Dec. 18.

Japan's Honda reports its profit rose on the back of strong U.S. demand

TOKYO (AP) -- Honda has reported its profit rose 3.5% in the October-December quarter from a year earlier on the back of solid demand in the U.S. and Europe and a recovery in its home market. Tokyo-based Honda said its profit in the last quarter was 253.3 billion yen, or $1.7 billion. Quarterly sales jumped 21%. A favorable exchange rate helped and is expected to continue through the rest of the fiscal year, which ends in March. A decline in Honda's vehicle sales in Thailand and Indonesia was offset by rising sales in China.
