Court proceedings

Brown County District Court

• Zachary Lucas Bongers, 32, Albert Lea, was charged Tuesday with Felony 3rd-degree drug possession of a Schedule II controlled substance in a drug treatment facility and misdemeanor violate restraining order. A Zoom hearing was set for 10 a.m. July 17.

According to court documents, New Ulm Police Officer Greg Miller got a phone call at 1:25 a.m. June 2 from a Brown County Evaluation Center staff member (witness 1) who said a man brought in items for one of their patients that contained narcotics.

At detox, officer Miller was shown a “rock” of what he believed to be methamphetamine, based on training and experience plus a piece of tin foil with burnt black and orange residue on it found in a Cheez-It box. The witness described the individual who brought the items in as 5 feet, 9 inches tall, wearing a beard and weighing 190-200 pounds.

Video from a second witness showed the individual was possibly Bongers, who because of an Harassment Restraining Order, (HRO), was prevented from having contact with the recipient of the items.

Running Bongers’ driver’s license, Officer Miller noticed he was served an HRO, that a juvenile victim is the protected person and that the juvenile victim’s name was written on Bongers’ white board. Officer Miller looked up Bongers’ photo and noticed he had dropped off the items at detox.

Using a Nartec test, the suspected methamphetamine and tin foil tested positive and weighed about 1.98 grams.

Starting at $4.38/week.
