• Mitchell David Christian, 22, 401 Front St. S., New Ulm, was charged Jan. 12 with gross misdemeanor fourth-degree assault-peace officer, gross misdemeanor carry/possess pistol without permit-public place.

According to court documents, New Ulm Police were dispatched to the Flandrau State Park campground for a report of a male sleeping outside a cabin at 8:32 p.m. Jan. 11. Allina Ambulance was also dispatched because the complainant was not sure if the man was breathing.

The complainant told patrolman Trevor Kruse he was staying in the cabin and found the male in the entryway. Patrolman Kruse saw a male curled up in the corner, under a rug who did not respond to anything verbal.

K9 officer Erik Byro, Corp. Mathew Rasmussen and officer Kruse arrived. the male continued to be unresponsive. Officer Byro prepared to check vitals and possibly administer CRP when Officer Byro announced “gun.”

Officer Byro removed a tan-colored handgun from the male’s front waistband, removed the magazine and cleared a chambered round from the firearm. Officer Kruse secured the firearm in his squad car.

The male began to groan and wake up, identifying himself as Christian. He told officers he possessed a permit to carry but that his wallet was at home. Christian was transported to New Ulm Medical Center for treatment. Officer Kruse discovered Christian did not have a concealed carry permit.

Police were dispatched to New Ulm Medical Center at 11:21 p.m. Jan. 11 for a report of a patient, Christian, being physical because he couldn’t leave the facility.

Officer Kruse tried to place Christian in an escort hold but Christian tried hit hit Officer Kruse in the head with several closed fist punches, grazing Officer Kruze’s head once. No visible pain or injuries were sustained.

Christian was tased. Officer Kruse took control of Christian’s right arm and brought it behind his back as he passively resisted.
