GFW board discusses superintendent job posting

Plans to work with service cooperative

GIBBON — The Gibbon Fairfax Winthrop (GFW) School Board discussed the superintendent job posting at a work session Monday.

The board unanimously approved an 11-month interim superintendent contract in July with Dr. Kelly Smith after superintendent Dr. Jeff Horton resigned for a position in the metro area. Smith formerly worked at Winthrop Public School and GFW as a math teacher, athletic director and business manager.

Smith recommended the board use the South Central Services Cooperative (SCCS) to search for a new superintendent.

“The best thing about it is, we would only have to pay the service cooperative mileage. I recommend we post the job in December or January and begin interviewing after that. We should decide on hiring a full-time superintendent or share one with another district by Dec. 1,” said Smith.

He said the Cedar Mountain School District may be interested in sharing a superintendent.

“We’re not talking about (school district) consolidation or anything like that, just possibly sharing a superintendent. I’ll ask (former GFW and District 88 supt. now with SCCS) Jeff Bertrang and Harold Remme (former District 88 superintendent, now with SCCS) for a recommendation. they know the district and do a good job,” Smith said.

He recommended the board post the business manager job now and hopefully hire one by Jan. 1.

“There are not a lot of business managers out there. We could have and services cooperative help us find one,” said Smith.

He suggested holding community meetings in Gibbon and Winthrop for public input on dealing with existing school buildings.

Board member Dan Merkel said it would be good to put old school building topic on Gibbon and Winthrop City Council agendas in December.

Smith said he is looking into school building demolition costs.

He said work is progressing well on the new PreK-12 school building in Gibbon.

“Building panels are coming in this week. Walls are going up,” said Smith.

Starting at $4.50/week.
