Music for Memories Alzheimer’s fundraiser in Gibbon

Team Gibbon will host a downtown concert/street dance Saturday, Sept. 10, to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-related illnesses.

Featuring Nashville recording artist Jay Allen and local cover band, 2nd Notion, proceeds from the one-night-only event will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.

Gates open at 6 p.m., with 2nd notion kicking off the evening at 7 p.m.

Jay Allen will perform from 8-10 p.m, and 2nd Notion will play a second set until midnight.

Cost for the event is a $25 donation, $30 at the gate, with all proceeds being donated to the Alzheimer’s Association.

The street concert/dance will be held on 1st Avenue in Gibbon rain or shine, in Gibbon’s downtown business district.

Jay Allen is an Iowa native who hit the road to Nashville to follow his dreams of a career in music.

After seeing his mother suffer from Alzheimer’s, Allen wrote “Blank Stares.” A video of him performing the song with his mother on stage in Iowa went viral with over 500 million views on Facebook.

His mother has since died, but Allen continues to be an advocate for the Alzheimer’s Association, and the song has gone on to raise more than $50 million to help fight the disease.

Beth Magnusson, Team Gibbon’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s captain, said, “It has been a dream to get Jay Allen to help us raise funds for Alzheimer’s. We are so proud of him for the awareness he continuously brings to this disease. The community of Gibbon and surrounding communities have supported our numerous fundraisers assisting us to be top fundraising family team at the Mankato Walk to End Alzheimer’s for the last few years, but we hope this will bring awareness to a whole new level.”

Dana Lietzau, member of Team Gibbon, is excited for Allen’s appearance in Gibbon.

“Jay Allen’s song, ‘Blank Stares,’ has put into words the feelings, emotions and struggles that Alzheimer’s and other dementia puts on the entire family,” Lietzau said. “You will hear Jay’s passion and sincerity in all of his songs. He is truly a talented performer.” Lietzau and many others on Team Gibbon Walk to End Alzheimer’s are caregivers for Gibbon native Barb Bruns. At the age of 57, Bruns received the diagnosis of early onset Alzheimer’s, ending her 27-year career at 3M.

The Music for Memories event will also feature 2nd Notion, a local cover band that features songs from various genres.

Bring a chair if you would like, but this music and fun will keep you moving all evening.

The Music for Memories event will also include food vendors, raffle drawings and a silent auction. The silent auction items can be viewed in advance online and at the event.

An online auction format will be held and participants can bid from wherever they are, even if they are not at the concert.

The silent auction can be found at 32auctions.com/musicformemories. Items will be added through 6 p.m. on Sept. 10.

The Alzheimer’s Association brings awareness to the disease, provides support for caregivers through online and inperson support groups, a 24/7 helpline (800-272-3900). They also accelerate research across the globe through education and trialmatch.

Tickets are available at: City of Gibbon Offices, D’s Pitstop and Shooters, any Team Gibbon member or from Beth Magnusson at 507-766-0970. Online tickets are available at eventbrite.com/e/music-for-memories-tickets-291818816937.
