105-year-old’s secret to living: ‘You have to pray through it’

From left, “grandfriends” Judy Farrell and Caroline Welsch join Marie Dauer (standing) in celebrating her 105th birthday, along with “grandfriend” Lorraine Hofmeister.

Born on April 17, 1917, Marie Dauer has lived through so much, including two world wars. This faith-filled New Ulm native was one of 10 children raised by Herbet and Mathilda (Seifert) Theissen at 802 N. Franklin St. in New Ulm.

United in marriage to Paul Dauer on Oct. 16, 1939, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, the couple raised Margaret (Joseph Moran of Centennial, Colorado), John (Yolanda Perez of San Antonio, Texas), Tom (Kathy Dauer of Spokane, Washington), James, (Dr. Susan Tiegs of Albany, Oregon), and Peter (Patty Dauer of Entiat, Washington).

An abundance of birthday wishes, activities, and treats blessed Marie during her weeklong, 105th celebration. One of her gatherings included Divine Providence “grandfriends” Judy Farrell, Caroline Welsch, and Lorraine Hofmeister.

While the women planned next year’s festivities, Marie said in response, “One hundred and five is as far as I’m going!”

The women asked if she would share any words of wisdom, she replied: “I just worked hard. Sometimes it is tough, but you have to keep going. You have to pray through it.”
