SLEEPY EYE – Sleepy Eye Lake, its parks and the 3.1 mile paved trail around it have been described as a "hidden gem" by campers.
The lake trail is great for scenic walks with lots of birds, bicycling, walking or jogging.
The lake and its amenities are considered the most reliable seasonal sweet spot in southern Minnesota.
In May and June, the trail and lake are great for hiking, walking, paddling kayaks and paddle boards available for rent, or using your own watercraft. Single and double kayaks, paddle boards and life jackets are available.
A public boat launch is located at Sportsman's Park in the northeast corner of the lake.
Best classic lake days are July through August with busier weekends likely.
September is often the best balance with pleasant temperatures, fewer mosquitoes and nice early fall color beginning to show up.
Late September to October is often good for walking, birding, photography and relaxed time outdoors.
Holiday Lights in Motion displays 500,000 of Christmas-oriented LED lighting and displays from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day.
Winter can be fun with ice fishing, a big tournament, the Sleepy Eye Fish Derby with a huge crowd on the lake, set for Feb. 7, 2027.
Anglers target fish like walleye, northern pike, largemouth bass, bluegill and crappie on Sleepy Eye Lake.
Picnic areas with open space make it easy for family yard games and relaxing lake days. More scenic lake views are available with the recent removal of trees in parts of the parks.
Two modern cabins were recently built in Sportsman's Park. Camping amenities include electricity and water.
If campsites are fully booked on weekends, you may be able to change sites to stay longer. Camping continues through Sunday, Oct. 18.
Disc golfing was recently added to Allison Park on the southeast corner of the lake.
Scooters can be rented in Sportsman's Park for use on the lake trail. Maximum bike trail speed is 12 mph, 17 mph in Sleepy Eye itself.
Other park features include three fishing docks, playgrounds, a bathhouse including rest rooms with separate showers and an on-site dumping station. A large picnic shelter with fire pit is available to all those camping on Sportsman's Park.
Allison Park features include sand volleyball and basketball courts plus five shelters.
