More space New Minnesota Valley field house complete
After two years when the ground was first broken, the new Minnesota Valley Lutheran field house is now complete.
Named the Storm Field House after its sponsor Storm Equipment, the building encapsulates almost 2,500 square feet that includes 14 basketball hoops and three north-south facing volleyball courts.
“We just had such a need,” MVL Athletics Director Craig Morgan said. “It was such a need that our kids were staying later at night. We were sharing spaces, it was take down, set up on our gym floor as far as events coming in, and we would have to find extra space somewhere else or rent space other places to have our practices. And we’d reschedule games around some of that stuff.”
Along with the basketball hoops and volleyball courts, the field house features drop down nets to separate the gym into sections, room for extra seating on the ends of the courts for large audiences and a mezzanine above the main seating. The space also includes a new area for concessions to be sold and storage area for the sports equpiment the MVL sports teams us The field house also gives more room for the various events that MVL hosts throughout the year, from its Veterans Day program to graduation.
“Not just hosting big games to where our opponents and our fans can be very comfortable in this big space,” MVL Dean of Students said. “It’s going to seat a lot more people that way, and our big events like graduation and stuff like that, that’s really big.”
The upgrades to the playing space gave MVL one more opportunity — the ability to host playoff games for other classes.
However, that possibilities come with more problems, as MVL looks to regularly be in playoff contention in especially boys basketball while tournaments are going on. If MVL is going to be using the field house as those playoffs are happening, it’s unlikely that any section tournament will be playing there.
“I hope we’re still playing in the playoffs then,” Morgan said. “Could we host another class? We could. As long as we’re not playing that night. We couldn’t host a double-A, but we could host a single-A … The regions talked to me about it, but they came up with the same reason that I just said. We’re going to be playing those nights, and we’ll use it those nights.”
