Family Living Focus: June is Dairy Month — Reduce Risk of Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis, or thinning bones, makes your bones break easily. This condition is more common in women than in men. After women have gone through menopause, their bodies make less estrogen (a hormone that helps protect their bones). Their bones become more prone to breaking. Half of all women past menopause will break a bone during their lives. A bone density test can help determine whether your bones are prone to breaking. Most of us diet and check our weight, but the days of tall scales sitting on a street corner waiting for someone to put a penny in the slot and step on the scale are almost gone. It was during the 1920s and ‘30s that coin-operated scales were important. The first coin scales were made in Germany in 1885, and by 1889, the National Scale Company was manufacturing in the United States. We are grateful for the wonderful communities that we serve. You all have been so supportive over the past year with all of our efforts to adapt and serve as we were able. Thank you! As of June 1, we are back to our full normal hours. You can visit the library Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Our study and seating areas are back too, so if you want to beat the heat, work on a project, or have a quiet place to work or study, we’re happy to have you in the library again.
