Storytelling through illustration and visual arts is a practice and art. We're fortunate to have different artists visit us at the New Ulm Public Library and showcase their talents and stories. Here are some upcoming programs that embrace storytelling through the visual arts that we'd love for you to attend!
Tuesday, October 20th at 6:30 pm, photographer Jay Grammond will be presenting Ghost Signs and Grain Bins. His photography captures historic Minnesota farms and iconic advertisements displayed on agricultural features like barns and grain bins, and evokes nostalgia.
On Tuesday, October 27th at 6:30 pm, artist Faith Belt will be performing a theatrical puppet show for all ages followed by a special artist talk. Creating a contemplative, analog, and light-giving experience, the use of shadow and light in storytelling will engage the audience and bring two stories to life.
Thursday, October 29th at 5:30 pm, Faith will be leading a workshop on making your own shadow puppet. This workshop is for ages 16+ and does require registration. Spots are limited so don't wait! You can register by going to our website, newulmlibrary.org, and going to our events calendar; calling us at 507-359-8331; or registering in-person at the library.
These programs are free to attend and were made possible in part with a grant from the Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund of the Minnesota Clean Water, Land, and Legacy Amendment through the Traverse des Sioux Library System.
If you can't make these programs, here are some titles authored by artists who use different mediums in their storytelling and are available to check out!
Light Through the Trees: Photographs at The Morton Arboretum by Peter J. Vagt (779.3609 Vagt). Vagt's photography is gorgeous and offers a great perspective on the natural beauty of trees.
Everything Beautiful: A Guide to Finding Hidden Beauty in the World by Ella Frances Sanders (111.85 Sanders). This book includes hand-lettering and every page is covered in color and drawings to encourage seeing beauty anew.
The Upside-Down World: Meetings with the Dutch Masters by Benjamin Moser (759.9492 Moser)
While Moser dives deep into masterpieces of Dutch art and offers art history lessons to the reader, he also incorporates his own story of finding himself as he lived abroad in the Netherlands and wrestled with questions about art and existence.
New Ulm Public Library is located at 17 North Broadway and is open from 9:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday-Saturday.
