As daylight fades and temperatures fall, Minnesotans naturally spend more time in front of their screens. Broadcasters respond with fuller seasonal lineups--including a fresh crop of movies and series adapted from classic and contemporary books available at the New Ulm Public Library. Check out this list, with descriptions from the publishers, if you want to read a book that inspired directors:
"The Love Hypothesis" by Ali Hazelwood. "A fake relationship between scientists meets the irresistible force of attraction."
"Verity" by Colleen Hoover. Colleen Hoover books continue to fly off the shelves and now her work is on the screen again. This book deviates from her usual romances, in a twisted way.
"The Whisper Man" by Alex North. "In this dark, suspenseful thriller, Alex North weaves a multi-generational tale of a father and son caught in the crosshairs of an investigation to catch a serial killer preying on a small town."
"Dune Messiah" by Frank Herbert. This is book two of the Dune Chronicles, one of the best-selling science fiction adventures of all time.
"One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. One reviewer suggests that this book "should be required reading for the entire human race." Words like that are hard to ignore!
"The Bodyguard" by Katherine Center. "Hannah Brooks looks more like a kindergarten teacher than somebody who could kill you with a wine bottle opener...but the truth is, she’s an Executive Protection Agent, and she just got hired to protect superstar actor Jack Stapleton from his middle-aged, corgi-breeding stalker."
"Whalefall" by Daniel Kraus. "From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author comes a scientifically accurate thriller about a scuba diver who’s been swallowed by an eighty-foot, sixty-ton sperm whale and has only one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out."
"The Dog Stars" by Peter Heller. "Surviving a pandemic disease that has killed everyone he knows, a pilot establishes a shelter in an abandoned airport hangar before hearing a random radio transmission that compels him to risk his life to seek out other survivors."
"Klara and the Sun" by Kazuo Ishiguro. This book "is a magnificent achievement, one that offers a look at our changing world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator to explore the fundamental question: what does it mean to love?"
"Gone Tomorrow" by Lee Child. The author's enduring popularity expands further as this book inspires season four of the hit streaming series "Reacher."
"The Last Sunrise" by Anna Todd. "Eva Longoria stars in this movie-tie in about a sheltered young woman whose summer abroad sparks a life-changing romance and journey of self-discovery."
"Unaccustomed Earth" by Jhumpa Lahiri. "These eight stories take us from Cambridge and Seattle to India and Thailand, as they explore the secrets at the heart of family life."
"In a Holidaze" by Christina Lauren. "One Christmas wish, two brothers, and a lifetime of hope are on the line for hapless Maelyn Jones in this quintessential holiday romantic comedy."
"I Will Find You" by Harlan Coben. "In this breathtaking thriller, an innocent father serving life for the murder of his own son receives evidence that his child may still be alive–and must break out of prison to find out the truth."
"Ransom Canyon" by Jodi Thomas. The book was originally published in 2015 and now it's a popular streaming series, where "the lives, loves and ambitions of four families will converge, set against a landscape that can be as unforgiving as it is beautiful."
"True Believer" by Jack Carr. "Former Navy SEAL James Reece’s skill, cunning, and heroism put the US government back in his debt and set him on another path of revenge."
"Victorian Psycho" by Virginia Feito. This book "hacked its way into the hearts of readers and critics alike. In this gruesome tale, Winifred Notty arrives at Ensor House prepared to play the perfect governess [but she] struggles to stifle the violent compulsions of her past. Blissfully, Christmas is coming, and she has very special gifts planned for these dear, ugly souls."
