Take a Break

Off the Shelf

I know we are well into summer, but if you are still looking for travel destinations in the coming months, I have some ideas for you.

I’ll start with Fodor’s Bucket List USA: 500+ Ultimate Experiences, From the Epic to the Eccentric (917.3 Fodors 2026). It is loaded with interesting locations from every state. I opened the book to Iowa and found out they hold the University of Okoboji Winter Games in the town of Arnold’s Park. Have you ever entered an ice auger race? Head down to Arnold’s Park and join in.

Here is another ultimate list: 50 States: The Ultimate Travel List: The Best Things to See and Do in Every State (917.304 Fifty). “Iconic landmarks, national parks, scenic drives, historic sites, local eats, and offbeat gems – curated for wow-factor and cultural insight.”

There are many travel guides that are arranged state by state. You can choose the one that best meets your needs. You may want to look at Moon’s USA State by State: The Best Things to Do in Every State for your Travel Bucket List (917.304 Moon 2026).

Do your summer travel plans include finding beautiful places to hike? If so, you will want to check out National Geographic’s 100 Hikes of a Lifetime U.S.A.: The Country’s Ultimate Scenic Trails by Stephanie Pearson (796.51 Pearson). Each trail description includes beautiful pictures to inspire you.

No USA travel list would be complete without a guide to our National Parks. National Geographic has published the Ultimate Guide to the National Parks: A Complete Tour of all 63 U.S. Parks (917.304 Smith). I guess I better get started if I want to visit them all!

If you prefer staying a little closer to home, I recommend Wandermore in Minnesota: Your Ultimate Guide to the Land of 10,000 Lakes! by Seth Varner (917.76 Varner). You will find information on every incorporated town in Minnesota, yes even Cobden, population 36, and Evan, population 70. In addition, there are QR Code photo albums that give you a virtual tour of each town. It’s time for a Minnesota road trip!

Are you looking forward to traveling the world? Stop in and page through the National Geographic Traveler’s Atlas of the World (912 Nationa). It is a beautiful, heavy, travel information-filled book. It is not a book you are going to pack to take with you on your travels. A couple of other world travel books you may be interested in are Fodor’s Travel: Essential Norway (914.804 Fodors 2026) and Europe by Eurail: Touring Europe by Train by LaVerne Ferguson-Kosinski (914.04 Ferguso).
