Plant for the pollinators
Off the Shelf
June is National Pollinator Month. Please consider planting pollinator-friendly plants as you plan your gardens. Not only are they beautiful flowering plants, they attract birds, bees, butterflies and many other insects that pollinate. According to the National Wildlife Federation, pollinators are responsible for one of every three bites of food we take. Wow, that’s amazing! If you need some guidance about pollinator-friendly plants, the library can help. We have the following books on that very subject.
“Attracting Native Pollinators: Protecting North America’s Bees and Butterflies” by the Xerces Society (631.52 Attract). It contains native plant lists for all regions of the country. Includes color photos and growing information
“Pollinators of Native Plants: Attract, Observe and Identify Pollinators and Beneficial Insects with Native Plants” by Heather Holm (595.715 Holm). An all-inclusive book listing information about native plants and the pollinators that love them.
“100 Plants to Feed the Monarch: Create a Healthy Habitat to Sustain North America’s Most Beloved Butterfly” by the Xerces Society (638.5789 LeeMade). Page through this extensive guide to plants that help the monarch survive. We’ve all heard that we need to plant milkweeds, but beyond the many varieties of milkweeds that flourish in the Midwest, there are several other plants that help the monarchs.
“100 Plants to Feed the Bees: Provide a Healthy Habitat to Help Pollinators Thrive” by the Xerces Society (638.1 One). This book has a full two pages of photos and information devoted to each plant featured.
“The Bee-Friendly Garden: Design an Abundant, Flower-Filled Yard that Nurtures Bees and Supports Biodiversity” by Date Frey and Gretchen LeBuhn (595.799 Frey). You will find all the information you need to landscape your home with plants that support bees of all kinds.
