Happy New Year! Here are some great new books that will be coming soon to the Children's Room.
Zoey Abbott examines what it's like to be young and experience fear and anxiety in "The Pig and Horse and Something Scary." Pig is afraid of something but doesn't want to talk about it yet. Horse stays by her side trying to distract her from her thoughts. Pig is finally able to find some relief by talking to Horse about her fears. Children suffer from anxiety and fear from time to time and need guidance on how to deal with it. This book is an excellent starting place for a meaningful conversation.
In "Off Limits" by Helen Yoon a little girl waits until her dad leaves his home office for a break before entering to explore all the fantastic things he gets to have fun with each day. She really is just going to look around and then decides that no one will miss just one little piece of tape, right? She ends up decorating the lamp with tape and making a chain of paperclip among other office supply creations. What a fun and creative take on working at home from a child's perspective.
"Big Ship Rescue" by Chris Gall is a beautifully illustrated book about a ship called Goliath that gets wrecked in a storm. Enter Captain Miley who comes to the rescue with her tug boat, the Mighty Mackerel. The story takes the reader on an adventure in the rescue of the crew and the salvage of the cargo and ship. It is filled with facts about the two ships involved and is sure to be a hit with children and adults who love ships and all things mechanical.
Inspired by a true story, "The Keeper" by Guadalupe Garcia McCall is an excellent middle grade horror story that will keep the reader guessing until the end. James and his family move from Texas to Oregon for a once in a lifetime opportunity. The town and the neighbors seem idyllic until James receives the first letter. At first James believes the letter is just the latest prank in a war that he is having with his sister, Ava. But by the time the third letter arrives James is worried, and so is Ava. Unfortunately, because of their prank war, no one believes them. James and Ava discover the town's secret of missing children and soon set out on a dangerous mission to uncover the identity of the Keeper because that may be the only way for them to survive. The story is a suspense-filled middle grade story that is creepy in the same vein as the Goosebumps series
I love the Who HQ series by Scholastic. This series of biographies cover people, places and event that have made an impact on our lives. The newest books out this month are; "Who is Chloe Kim" by Stefanie Loh, and "Who is Dale Earnhardt Jr." by David Stabler. Kim is the youngest woman to earn an Olympic gold medal in snowboarding at just seventeen years old. Earnhardt Jr. is one of the greatest professional stock race car drivers in the world who started his career at just seventeen years old. You will find both of these new books at the end of the Junior Non-fiction area.
The last book I want to mention is "WonderCat Kyuu-Chan" by Sasami Nitori. This is a great middle school manga about a young man who rescues a very special cat. Kyuu-chan loves snack and cuddles, but loves his new owner most of all. The series is sweet and full of life. Those who like "Chi's Sweet Home" will love this series.
