Off the Shelf: Thank you!

This is just a note of thanks to all who have helped make the New Ulm Summer Reading Program the best that we could this year.

First, thank you to the children, parents, and caregivers who graciously accepted that this year was going to again be different than years past. I know it hasn’t been easy to be able to come to the library only to have it be a different experience without our toys. I appreciate your willingness to grab your books, movies, audiobooks, and your Take-it & Make-it crafts and coloring pages and enjoy these activities at home. I thank you for your enthusiasm for the new crafts and new scavenger hunt each week.

Thank you to all who participated this year by filling out the Bingo Sheet, searching for book characters in the Downtown Picture Hunt, and writing a book review of one of your favorite reads this summer. It was so much fun to see what you had chosen to do to get to Bingo! We love to hear how your downtown hunts go each summer. We were also excited to see so many entries for the Lego Challenge which was new this summer.

Second, I want to say thank you to our community partners this year. Thank you to the manager of McDonald’s who dropped off ice cream cone coupons for the kids to enjoy. We appreciate your generosity each year.

Thank you to the downtown businesses who agreed to be sites for the animal pictures and Q-R codes in the Downtown Picture Hunt and the Teen Q-R Code Hunt this year. We appreciate the following businesses for their participation in the fun:

The Backerei

Concordia Lanes

Bumblelou

Domino’s Pizza

Gallery 512 Boutique

Guten Tag Haus

The Lamplighter Restaurant

Lyric 3 Theater

Kemski’s

MN Eis – Ice Cream Shop

The New Ulm Flea Market

The New Ulm Chamber of Commerce

New Ulm Community Market

Red Dragon Gaming

You made this summer so much better for our library patrons by giving them something familiar to do.

I want to thank all of the patrons who worked on our circulation goal this year by checking out materials from the library. We averaged about 3000 check outs a week to meet our goal at 30,689 items checked out in 10 weeks. So, we will be purchasing the items that won the vote! Our birth through kindergarten age range overwhelming wanted to play with a new Duplo Lego set, and our older elementary-aged kids will be excited to be able to build and program one of two new Solar Robots. Those items will be waiting for you to use them here in the library as soon as we can spend some quality play time together again. The teens decided that they would take their chances on a mystery prize, and will be enjoying the use of a 3-D pen.

Last but not least, a big thank you to the library staff, especially Miss Amy, who all go along with and follow through with all the crazy ideas that run around my brain each year for the summer reading program. They are always kind and supportive, no matter what.

The library is located at 17 N. Broadway and is open to the public Monday to Thursdays 9:30 a.m.-8 p.m. and Friday and Saturdays 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. The library will be closed on Monday, September 6, 2021 in observance of Labor Day.
