Off the Shelf: Found: Your next great book

Are you sometimes at a loss when looking for your next book to read? We can help! New Ulm Public Library has resources to keep you on top of the latest releases and also not so recent releases.

A new addition to the library is BookPage. Bookpage is a great way to keep up with new book releases. They publish a wonderful guide filled to the brim every month. It contains book previews and reviews, author interviews, and feature articles about, you guessed it…books! We are very fortunate that the Friends of the New Ulm Public Library have donated the funds for a print subscription to BookPage. Stop into the library and grab the latest copy. You will find them next to the card catalog by the Service Desk and also near the Self Checkout station on the main floor of the library. I predict you will be making your TBR (to be read) list in no time.

Also made possible by the Friends of the New Ulm Public Library is Wowbrary, a weekly email about the latest new arrivals at the New Ulm Library. Start receiving your email by visiting our library website (www.newulmlibrary.org). Under the Digital Library tab, click on “Wowbrary.” Choose “Sign Up” from the blue banner at the top of the page and start seeing all the new items from the previous week to hit the New Ulm library shelves. You can place a hold on an item right from your email with just a click!

Another way to find a great book is to take a walk through the library and look at all of the wonderful displays our staff puts together every month. For the month of August, you will find the following displays: If You Can’t Be Here, At Least You Can Read about it; It Happened at the Library; Chill Out with a Cool Winter Read; August is Like the Sunday of Summer – Make the Most of It; U.S.- Dakota War of 1862; Read Me Maybe?; Top Nonfiction Audiobooks That Will Make You Smarter, and up in the Children’s area, Tell Me a Story. If you are wondering what kind of books these somewhat cryptic displays contain? Stop in and see! Don’t forget to take a look at the TV screen near the Service Desk on your way by to find library information, including future programs, and staff recommendations as well.

There are also many online resources, too many to mention here, but I want to highlight a few. Let’s start with one you have no doubt heard of and maybe already use, Goodreads. Goodreads (goodreads.com), has lots of great information to take a look at without an account, but you have access to even more features if you set up an account. Book Riot (bookriot.com) has so much information and fun stuff on their website, you just need to take a look. And while you’re there, click on the menu and sign up for some of the many newsletters they offer. Another online book resource I like is Shelf Awareness (shelf-awareness.com). Shelf Awareness also has a newsletter you can sign up for if you want book news delivered to your inbox.

I hope you find these bookish resources fun and useful, but remember… library staff is also here to help you find your next great book! If you know a member of the Friends of the New Ulm Public Library group, be sure to tell them you appreciate their contributions to the library.

If you’d like to request library items, visit www.newulmlibrary.org and click on Library Catalog or give us a call at 507-359-8331. We’d be happy to place materials on hold for you.
