Off the Shelf: Summer Reading 2021

This year’s Summer Reading Program titled “Tails and Tales” starts on Monday, June 14, 2021 and runs through Monday, August 16, 2021. We will be doing a “check-out” count again this year working to reach a goal of 30,000 items checked out of the library in just 10 weeks. Sounds like a huge goal, but it’s not just the kids of New Ulm who are working on this goal. Everyone who checks out any item from the library during this time will be helping to reach this goal. All we need to do is check out 3,000 items from the library each week. You can see our progress by keeping an eye on our new friend, Red the red panda. Watch the rings on his tail to know just how we’re doing each week. You’ll see Red every time you walk into the library and approach the customer service desk.

When we hit this goal we are going to purchase things that the kids will be able to use in the library. So with each visit to the library the kids can vote on one of two choices. Last year’s choices included magnetic blocks or a cityscape rug for the construction center for the kids in the age range birth through Kindergarten. The first graders were able to vote for either an 80 piece Lego mini figures set, or Artie 3000. And the teens, anyone in six to twelfth grade, were given a choice between a maker space and a mystery prize. We are currently working on what items you will be voting for this summer. You’ll find out when you stop by and visit us.

We are continuing Take-It & Make-It crafts and STEAM projects through the summer reading program. Craft kits will start the week of June 14 and a new craft will be available every other week. STEAM kits will be available the week of June 21 and a new project can be picked up every other week after that.

The Lego Challenge will continue through the summer. Every third Thursday of the month, go to the library’s Facebook page to find a new challenge to build. Drop off a photo of your creation at the Children’s desk and we will feature it in our Lego Challenge Wall of Fame.

A bingo sheet will be available in the Children’s area of the library to help you help us with our check-out goal. Turn in your completed bingo sheet for a chance to win a gift card to a local shop. We will be partnering with local businesses again this year to create another Downtown Scavenger Hunt. Stop in and pick up a sheet and head downtown to find 8 animal pictures posted in store front windows throughout town. Turning in your completed scavenger hunt sheet will also enter you into a drawing for a gift card to a local business. When you visit the library’s website, click on the Kid’s and Young Adult tab to find a link to a book review form. Tell us what you think of the book you just read and you will be entered into a drawing for a gift card to a local business. All of these ways to enter to win a local business gift card will be available starting June 14, 2021.

Teens in grades 6 to 12 can participate by picking up a bingo sheet in the Young Adult area of the library. A completed form turned in by the end of the program will be entered in to a drawing for a gift card to a local business. Craft kits for teens will be available at the Service desk starting on June 14. A new project will be available every two weeks. Teens will also have the ability to participate in a QR Code Hunt throughout town. Simply look for a library QR code in a store front or business anywhere in New Ulm and follow the link to be entered into a drawing for a gift card from a local business.

To end the summer on a high note we will be hosting the last Concert in the Park on Monday, August 30, 2021. Join us for the zany antics and music of the Teddy Bear Band. The 45 minute concert will start at 7 p.m. at the Amphitheater in German Park. Don’t forget your teddy bear!
