Less than five hours after they were alleged to have perpetrated1 a threatened hold-up and demanded Mrs. Julia Thordson of Lake Hanska township to hand over $5, Peter J. Fuschen, 50, Peter Neu, 50, and Raymond Neu, 22, all of Whittemore, Iowa, were behind the bars in the Fairmont jail. They were returned to New Ulm the following day and after having been taken into court here they were released because of lack of evidence. The three men stated that they were enroute home from threshing on their farm in Prairieville township.
Men Demand Money
According to the story of Mrs.Thordson, who is said to have identified the men later, the three men drove up to the Thordson farm Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock in a Chevrolet sedan with Iowa license number 61,2333. One of the men stepped to the door at the same time Mrs. Thordson appeared in the doorway.
'We'll have to have some money, lady," was the hold-up man's salutation, according to Deputy Sheriff Wm. Gieseke who was called to investigate. Mrs. Thordson replied that she did not have any, the man threatened to shoot her if she did not hand over $5. Screams of Mrs. Thordson attracted her daughter-in-law who came running and the men were frightened away.
Are Later Released.
Authorities were summoned from New Ulm and Deputy Wm. Gieseke investigated but was unable to find any trace of the car or the men. It was at first believed that they were headed toward Sleepy Eye, and officials there were notified to be on the lookout. Fairmont officials were also notified and Sheriff W.S. Carver and Deputy Santee went west of that city to watch. After a short time a car answering the description of the one given by local authorities, was stopped. The men protested being held, but upon the arrival of Deputy Gieseke and John Zischka of this city and after identification of Mrs. Thordson, the three men were brought to New Ulm to answer to a charge of attempted robbery. They were released after being questioned because of lack of evidence placed in the county jail at St. Peter.
