Just when it was needed the least, Farmfest got rain this morning.
But farmers didn't mind anything they could get on the thirsty acres of Minnesota.
By mid-morning about .4 inch had been recorded at Farmfest, which opened at 6 a.m.
New Ulm had a drizzle through the morning.
Roads leading to Farmfest, near Lake Crystal, were reported filled with vehicles. A serious accident in which three persons were killed marred the opening.
BROWN COUNTY Fairgrounds keeper Dale Schlottman isn't sure how all the campers found out about the grounds allowing campers during Farmfest, but he's finding space for all of them.
Sunday night 63 campers in trailers, camping units and tents flocked on the fairgrounds to set up home during Farmfest.
"We have about 63 more coming in today. Some will leave Tuesday and Wednesday and more will come in throughout the week," Schlottman said.
Like a well advertised motel, the fairground officials have been taking reservations and making space for campers.
"They have been leaving from here and taking buses to Farmfest," he added.
SO FAR, visitors staying at the fairgrounds are from as far away as Ohio, Montana, Michigan, North and South Dakota and Iowa.
Fairground officials provide electricity, water, showers and bathroom facilities.
Four and sometimes five people are working at the fairgrounds. Schlottman is on duty 24 hours a day.
"It was unexpected, but it's turning into a big operation," he said. How did they find out the fairgrounds was available.
"I don't know for sure, maybe the radio and perhaps the newspapers, but I think mostly the CB'ers passed the message around," the caretaker added.
