Applications have been filled with the Minnesota Railroad and Warehouse commission by the Tri-State Telephone & Telegraph Co. and the Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. for some reductions and modifications in long distance rates, which will mean a substantial saving for Minnesota telephone users. The proposed changes are supplemental to those going into effect August 21, this year, which also were petitioned for by the two concerns.

Outside Minnesota, Too.

Officials of the petitioning telephone companies have announced that, in addition to the applications filed with the commission for changes in their long distance rates within the state, they propose to modify their rates from Minnesota to points in other states. The contemplated schedule of reduced rates will result in substantial reductions for the longer distances, both to stations within Minnesota and to points in other states.

Reductions Are General.

All changes proposed for calls within the state of Minnesota and to points in Iowa, Nebraska, North and South Dakota are reductions, while there are some slight increased for the shorter distances to states other than those mentioned. The net results of these changes in rates, telephone officials Bay, will be a substantial saving for Minnesota telephone users.

Lower Costs Cause Slash

Long distance cables, carrier systems, vacuum tube repeaters, loading coils, and other improved devices and methods resulting from continuous scientific research and development applied to the telephone industry, have effected economies on the longer circuits and have a share in making the proposed reductions possible.

Reduced Rates 7 P.M.

One of the important features of the changes proposed, is to establish a new evening discount period from 7 to 8:30 o'clock, for station-to-station calls. Between these hours, the discount will be approximately 25 per cent of the day station-to-station rates, and from 8:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
