A traffic census, taken over a period of seven days at sixteen different points in the Mankato maintenance district, of which R. J. Short is superintendent, shows that there was an average daily movement of vehicles over the trunk highways of over 10,000 per day.
Between New Ulm and Sleepy Eye on Trunk Highway No. 7, taken at a point a short distance west of New Ulm, on the old route, there was a daily average of 472 vehicles. An explanation is necessary. Last year's average was in excess of a thousand vehicles. This difference is caused by having two marked routes between New Ulm and Sleepy Eye. The grading of the new route was completed early in July and the highway being in good condition and well maintained, both routes were marked and signed at each end directing traffic over the new route during, dry weather periods. Mr. Short states that in his belief over 50 per cent of the traffic went over the new route, and, as the traffic census was taken only on the old route, this count would be practically valueless for determining the daily average of vehicles traveling between New Ulm and Sleepy Eye.
On this count there was a daily average of foreign cars, i.e., cars from other states, of 30 per day. There were cars from the following states: Ohio, Nebraska, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Montana, Michigan, Illinois, Kansas, Indiana, California, Iowa, North Dakota, Wyoming and Texas. This count was taken by Melvin and Edwin Schreyer, The record was kept of only those vehicles traversing the old route.

and Mankato.
Between New Ulm and Mankato, the census was taken at a point on the southeast fork from the junction of Trunk Highways Nos. 7 and 21, south of the village of Nicollet. There was a daily average of 610 vehicles. There were cars from the following states: Iowa, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Illinois, Nebraska, Indiana, Kansas, New York, Washington, Missouri, Michigan, Canada, Wyoming, California, Oregon, Montana, Ohio, Virginia, Georgia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Indiana. There was a daily average of 71 cars.
This count was taken by Martin Isberner and Alvin Isberner.

Heaviest Movement.
The heaviest movement of vehicles in this maintenance district was on Trunk Highway No. 5 between Mankato and St. Peter at a station three miles north of Mankato. The average daily movement for the seven days was 2,282. This was partially due to the American Legion convention, held at Mankato, during the week of the enumeration.
The average on Trunk Highway No. 5, between Elmore and Blue Earth was 663.
Between Vernon Center and Mankato on the same highway an average daily movement of 472 was recorded. On Trunk Highway No. 16, between Mankato and Lake Crystal, there was an average daily passage of 685 cars. Between Janesville and Mankato the daily average was 603 vehicles and on No. 9 between Blue Earth and Fairmont it was higher, an average of 887.
Between Banks and Blue Earth, the average traffic was 618 vehicles, and between the south state line and Fairmont, 770.
Four hundred seventy-eight vehicles passed on Highway No. 15 between Truman and Madelia each day during the check.
Madelia-St. James travel along highway No. 16 was comparatively light, the daily average being only 393. Between St. Peter and New Ulm it was also lighter with 388 vehicles on an average. The lowest of all was along highway No. 39 between Banks and Wells. The average daily count here was 357 vehicles.
