Leo Burns alias Eugene Welsh was taken into custody by Sheriff Julius Monday as he was about to step out of the doors of the St. Cloud reformatory. He is wanted here for the theft of the Linus Glotzbach car which he stole here in 1924.

Car Stood On Broadway

The car in question, a Ford Sedan, was taken on Thursday, August 14, 1924 while standing in front of the Wm. Muesing, Jr. home on North Broadway, next to the Methodist church. Police officials immediately got busy, wiring and notifying the officers in the Northwest. A few days later Chief of Police Alwin Harmening received word from Sioux City, Ia., that they had taken Leo Burns into custody and that he had confessed to taking the car.

Robbed Haberdashery

Same Night

From the confession obtained from Burns at the time he was first taken it was ascertained that he took the car around 8:30 in the evening. From here he went to Herron Falls, Minn. where he entered a haberdashery owned by L. J. Cunningham and took a supply of shirts, hats, sweaters, pants and neckties. From there he went south to Sioux City where he was arrested by a detective.

Jackson County Gets Him

After being informed that Burns had been taken at Sioux City, Chief of Police Harmening informed the officials that he would come down the next day and get his man. When he arrived, however, his man was no longer there, having been turned over to the Jackson County Sheriff, the man in charge not knowing that he had been promised the Brown County officials. He was given a hearing in Jackson County and received a sentence of five years in the St. Cloud reformatory. Good behavior enabled him to cut his time down to a little less than two years, but just as he was about to find his freedom he again finds himself confronted by the law.

Hearing To Be Held Soon

A hearing will no doubt be held within the next few days and it is presumed that Burns will plead guilty and receive his sentence immediately
