Luther girls win big

Martin Luther Academy of New Ulm trounced Sleepy Eye High School 86-37 in a girls dual track meet Monday at Johnson Field here.

Luther is 3-0 in dual meets but finished far down the list in the Winthrop Relays. The Rams have another chance in a multi-school meet when they host the MLA Invitational 11 a.m. Saturday; there will be a boys division and girls division Saturday.

Monday’s meet was the first of five straight home appearances, concluding with the Red Rock meet May 18.

Luther took 10 of the 15 first places. Marge Hoyer won both hurdles. She hasn’t reached last year’s performances when she qualified for the state meet, but coach Donna Kruggel attributed it to a busy spring schedule of other school events that limited her practice time for track.

Mary Schultz lowered Luther’s school record to 14:07.5 in the two mile run.

For Sleepy Eye, Deb Trochlil won the 440 and 880 while Deb Lowinske won both weights.
