Fourteen Other Schools To Compete For Prize Awards

Representatives of the local public high school will join students from fifteen southern Minnesota high schools who will take part in the seventh district music contest which is to be held in Mankato, Saturday May 1. Contestants listed in this musical feature from the local school and other schools as well, already are making preparations for the event. Final arrangements for the contest, selection of the various classes and divisions of the events, have been made by the executive committee composed of Supt. H. D. Kies of Mankato, Supt. W. H. Towne of Fairmont and Supt. C. W. VanCleve of Springfield.
Cities who will send delegations to the district contest include: New Ulm, Albert Lea, Fairmont, Mankato, Blue Earth, Mountain Lake, Sleepy Eye Arlington, Truman, Nicollet, Wells, Buffalo Lake, Jordan and Madelia.
New Ulm Sends Three Groups
New Ulm will be represented by the high school orchestra, the girl’s glee club, a music memory team and three soloists. The orchestra is under the direction of Principal H.E. Dirks, the three soloists will be from this group of musicians. Mrs. Alma Marti- Olson is the director of the glee club and both organizations have received expert training during the past few years under these efficient directors.
Contest Opens In Morning
The contest will be opened Saturday morning at 10 o’clock by a music memory contest. This will be followed by the orchestra section at 10:30. At 1 o’clock prompt in the afternoon the saxophone contest will be conducted; cornet contest at 1:30; trombone con-test, 1:50; girls’ glee club contest, class C at 2:15; violin contest at 3o’clock, piano contest at 3:30. The evening program will commence at 7:45 and will continue with the following numbers: girls’ glee club, division B; boys’ solo; clarinet solo; boys’ glee club; girls’ solo; mixed chorus; decision of judges and awarding of prizes. Cups will be awarded to the winners in classes number, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 12. Winners in classes numbers 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 will receive medals. The medals will be given to the individuals who take part in the solo contests, while the cups will be awarded to the high school organizations.
This is the second year the district and statewide competitive music contests have been staged and in the present instance the event is attracting wide attention. It is expected that the Mankato contest will attract a large attendance.
