Nineteen local gymnasts will represent the New Ulm Turnverein at the annual tournament of the Northwestern Gymnastic association, which is to be held at the University of Minnesota Armory, tomorrow evening. Some 300 gymnasts from educational institutions and gymnastic societies throughout the Northwest will compete for honors in this big event. The local team is made up largely of new material, and although it is not expected to take high honors, the men are confident of giving a good account of themselves.
Sixtieth Anniversary
Next Sunday, March 14, the members of the local gymnastic team will participate in a big district assembly (turntag) of the Minnesota Gymnastic district (turnbezirk), which is to be held in the St. Paul Armory. Thomas Pfaender, physical director of the New Ulm Turnverein, and who holds the same position in the district, is co-operating with the arrangements committee of the St. Paul Turnverein, and no efforts are being spared to make the program especially interesting and appropriate, as the 60th anniversary of the Minnesota Gymnastic district will be observed in conjunction with the district assembly.
Mayor to Speak
Mayor Arthur Nelson of St. Paul is expected to deliver an address at the anniversary jubilee, and excellent exhibition numbers will be presented by the ladies’ class of the St. Paul society and the crack La Crosse Normal College gymnastic team. Prof. Her-man Hein, Charles Emmerich, George Hogen and E. H. Haeberle of this city will act as judges at the tournament, Saturday evening.
